How much space should you have in shoes?

Reading time: 4 minutes | Last updated: June 20, 2025

You know that feeling when you slip on a shoe and it feels so perfect, like it was made just for your feet? That’s the magic of the perfect fit. Not too tight, not too loose – and enough room for your toes. So let’s talk shoe space, because how much room your feet get to breathe, wiggle, and walk makes all the difference in how you move through your day. But how much space should you have in shoes, really? Let’s find out.

How much space should you have in shoes

The golden rule of toe room

Ah, the golden rule of toe room! When trying on shoes, you should always have about a thumb’s width (roughly half an inch) of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. That little buffer is essential – not just for comfort, but also to give your feet room to move as you walk (because they slide forward a little with every step).

Too little space means blisters, bunions, and toe cramps.

Too much space means heel slipping and your foot sliding inside your shoes.

Both: not much fun.

But... your feet change throughout the day

Throughout the day, your feet tend to change – they swell a little (especially if you’ve been on your feet all day, had a salty lunch, or it’s warm out). So, shoes that fit like a glove at 8 AM might feel a little (or a lot) uncomfortable by 6 PM. Conclusion: you need wiggle room! That’s why we recommend trying on new shoes later in the day and walking around a bit to really feel them out. This way, you’ll know whether your feet can handle your shoes even after a long day.

How much space should you have in shoes: width

Length isn’t the only fit factor – width is just as important. Many women have feet that are slightly wider, narrower, or shaped in unique ways – and that’s totally normal! At Wolky, we design for real feet. That’s why many of our models are adjustable, with laces or Velcro straps.

Here are a few things to look for when checking the width of your shoes:

  • You should be able to slightly wiggle your toes side to side.
  • The shoe should not bulge or stretch at the sides when you’re standing.
  • You shouldn’t see imprints of your little toe trying to escape.

If your foot feels like it’s being squished from the sides, the shoe is too narrow.

Want to know more about our width sizes? You can find a detailed description of the shoe width in the ‘Fit description’ section on all of our product pages. Here’s an example: the Snallerina F2F is made for the average foot (width fitting M) and for feet with bunions. Just check the description to find out if the shoe’s made for your feet!

Quick tips for the perfect fit

  • Shop for shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest.
  • Always stand up when checking for toe space.
  • Make sure your heels don’t lift when you walk.
  • Listen to your feet – if something feels off, it probably is.
  • Don’t rely on breaking shoes in. Good shoes should feel great from step one.

In short: how much space should you have in shoes?

A little space goes a long way. Your shoes should give you support – not squeeze your feet into submission. So treat your feet right, give them the room they deserve, and let’s get walking.
