How should shoes fit

Reading time: 3 minutes | Last updated: April 21, 2026

At Wolky, we believe comfort is key when shopping for new shoes. Shoes should help you get through your day with ease, no matter what it brings you. Because when shoes fit right, your whole day instantly gets better. So… how should shoes fit? Let’s walk you through it.

How should shoes fit: model with Alabama slip ons

Snug, but not too snug

A good shoe should feel secure, but shouldn’t squish your toes. Your foot should sit comfortably in the shoe, without sliding around. If your toes feel cramped or squeezed together? That’s a no-go.

Wolky wisdom: Our shoes are designed to support your foot in its natural position, while keeping enough room for your toes to relax.

Enough room to wiggle those toes

Your toes need space. When you’re standing, you should have a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. This gives your foot room to move as you walk.

Especially if you deal with things like bunions or sensitive feet, this extra space is everything.

No slipping of the heel

Your heel should stay nicely in place when you walk. A tiny bit of movement is okay – but if your heel keeps lifting, the fit isn’t right.

Slipping of the heel can lead to blisters and instability. Definitely not something you’re looking for.

Many Wolky shoes feature adjustable closures (thanks to Velcro straps or laces), so you can fine-tune the fit to your foot (even if it changes throughout the day).

Support where you actually need it

Here’s where things get especially interesting. A lot of shoes feel soft, which gives you the illusion of comfort. However, real comfort stems from the combination of softness and support.

Soft may sound nice, but your feet (and knees and back) need proper support to keep everything aligned.

At Wolky, we incorporate softness and support into our shoes. Our supportive comfort is the kind that helps your foot roll naturally and keeps you moving all day long.

Adjustability for the perfect fit

Feet change. During the day, with the weather, over the years – you name it.

That’s why a good fit isn’t only about size. It’s about flexibility.

Straps, laces, Velcro – they’re your best friends. They let you adjust your shoes to your foot, instead of the other way around.

Try shoes exactly how you'd wear them

Your feet tend to swell during the day, so it’s always best to try on shoes in the afternoon or evening. Walk around (inside) and take your time.

Bonus tip: Wear the kind of socks you’d normally wear with the shoes you’re trying on. So if you’re trying on winter boots, try them with thick socks if that’s what you usually wear during wintertime.

Ready to find your perfect fit?

Your feet carry you through everything – work, walks, travel, life. Your shoes shouldn’t be slowing you down; they should help you get on your way!
